WHAT IS FORSKOLIN
Forskolin is made from the root of a plant in the mint and lavender family. Known as the Coleus Forskohlii plant (Indian Coleus) it grows in Nepal, India, and Thailand and has been used for 3,000 years in Ayurvedic medicine. Traditionally used to treat heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory disorders, convulsions/seizures, and insomnia, now it is widely used as a weight loss product, especially after being featured on the Dr. Oz show as a breakthrough in weight loss and controlling appetite.

DOES IT WORK?
Well, Dr. Oz seems to believe it does! We decided to check the best sources to determine for ourselves. A look at the US National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health (PubMed), reveals a few studies. Most have positive effects on the use of Forskolin although most are testing for specific reactions rather than weight loss.
This study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30387133 shows that Forskolin has a positive effect on stimulating brown adipose tissue. Great! Wait…what is that. Unlike regular old white fat, which stores calories, mitochondria-packed brown-fat cells burn energy and produce heat. So that’s what makes Forskolin help rid the body of white fat and become leaner and more healthy. Forskolin actually helps speed up metabolism and changes how you store calories.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
In addition to helping weight loss, Forskolin also has a wide variety of beneficial attributes. Because it increases cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) it activates many enzymes that are involved in cellular functions. Here are some of the other benefits from an article in Nutrition Review –
“Increased cellular cyclic AMP results in a broad range of physiological and biochemical effects, including inhibition of platelet activation (resulting in decreased likelihood of blood clots), reduced release of histamine (resulting in decreased allergy symptoms), increased force of contraction of the heart, relaxation of the arteries and other smooth muscles, increased thyroid function, and increased lipolysis (fat burning)”. – Ward Dean, MD
ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS?
As with any supplement you need to be aware of any side effects. If in doubt always check with your doctor. Some caution was advised for people with low blood pressure as Forskolin can lower your blood pressure. Forskolin is also not recommended for people currently on High blood pressure medication such as beta blockers as the combination has not been thoroughly studied.
